At the Irish College of English, we offer Intensive year-round English Courses in Dublin at our Malahide School. The Irish College of English is recognised by ACELS, a service of quality and qualifications Ireland, for English Language Education. Students can register for courses from 1 week  to 1 year in duration, and there is an excellent mix of nationalities in all our programmes. We also operate Learner Protection through our membership of MEI. Many students come to Ireland for a  1 – 4 Week Course with Host Family Accommodation to Improve their English, others come for our 1 Year Programmes to experience studying and living and working part time in Ireland.

At the Irish College of English our adults get special attention, at any time we limit the number of adults to 60 students hence offering a boutique type school where individual needs can be met and progress monitored. Host Families in Walking Distance/Very Short Bus Journey

All our students stay in carefully selected families in Malahide or Surrounding Areas in single rooms and all students can either walk to school or take a very short bus or train journey. We guarantee one nationality per family unless otherwise requested. Our Families are the highlight of the experience and have quality assurance procedures in place, ensuring great stays for all our students.

Note: During some periods adults may be located in our next towns including Portmarnock, Kinsealy and Donabate and have a 10-20 minute commute to school. This would be communicated at the time of booking.

Choosing Dates

We are flexible regarding arrival and departure days and times. The majority of students arrive on a Saturday or Sunday and begin school on a Monday and leave on the corresponding Saturday or Sunday e.g. Sat to Sat or Sun to Sun. We also accept weekday arrivals and departures e.g. Mon to Mon, Wed to Wed etc. Extra nights are also available if necessary.

What’s Included

Tuition

We have a specially designed Adult Syllabus to encourage your  progression and confidence with an emphasis on building fluency. We believe in real materials and growing to love the language by living it. Classes are international and have a maximum of 15 students per class. 15 full hours tuition per week. (Classes 9.00am – 12.15pm each day with a 15 minute break). 

* Due to Covid-19 we are operating Small Group Classes of up to 7 students per Class Currently

Accommodation Option

Our accommodation is in homestays in Malahide and Surrounding Areas either in walking distance or a very short bus journey from our school. We guarantee one nationality per family unless friends wish to stay together. Our hosts typically take 2-3 students at a time and all our adults have single rooms. Families will do student’s laundry as part of their normal home routine. We carefully match students with families. Families provide breakfast, packed lunch and evening meal. Meals are nutritious and we can cater for special diets on request. On arrival we also give students a welcome pack including a reusable water bottle and our school has a water refilling station. Weekday Activities

Students have access to our weekly Optional pay as you go activity programme. We provide a free leader to bring you on our afternoon trips and you pay for your travel  and entrance fees.

Full Day Trips

Each Saturday our students have the opportunity to book a full day trip. Sample Day Trips: Glendalough, Kilkenny, Belfast, Cliffs of Moher etc.

Travel Card

Students attending a full time course can apply for a Dublin Discount Travel Card.

Free Conversation Class

Our Conversation Classes are free of charge for our enrolled students.

Student Report & Certificate

Students receive a Certificate of Attendance and Attainment at the end of their course and also an individual hand written teacher report on their progress.

 

Academic Focus

The main focus of these intensive English courses is on Rapid Learning for Communication in Spoken and Written English. Our highly qualified English teachers set students clear learning objectives and use the latest modern teaching techniques to provide language practice in speaking, writing, listening and reading, to improve English pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. These English language classes also include an Irish Culture Component, which covers Irish language, traditional music, history and culture. These special English lessons will provide those students learning English in Ireland with a better knowledge of the local people and culture, enabling them to become more actively involved with the unique Irish way of life. Work and Study in Ireland

Students Requiring a Study Visa to Work and Study in Ireland: Our courses are also suitable for non-EU students requiring study visas to enter Ireland. The Irish College of English can assist students with study visa applications and will issue a letter of acceptance upon registration. We will also issue you a College Letter needed to apply for the right to work in Ireland. Our Academic Year Programme (25 weeks tuition within an 8 month study period) are included on the Department of Education and Skills Internationalisation register of programmes approved by the Minister for Education and Skills for the purpose of access to employment by students from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland. Frequently Asked Questions

What will the timetable be?

Classes are from 9.15am – 12.30pm each day and in the summer this timetable changes to an afternoon session with classes from 1.30pm – 4.45pm each day. Extra Evening and one to ones can be added. We have pay as you go adult activities in the afternoon or in the morning in the summer and an ICE Leader accompanies the group on all activities.

What is the nationality mix?

We have excellent nationality mix and at any time we normally have between 8 and 12 nationalities represented at our school.

How do I choose arrival and departure dates and times?

We base a 1 week stay on 7 nights 2 week stay on 14 nights accommodation, 3 weeks on 21 nights and 4 weeks on 28 nights. Most students arrive on a Sat or Sun and depart on the corresponding Sat or Sun but we are also happy for students to arrive and depart during the week. Should you require an extra night in the home stay a 32 euro additional fee applies. We are very flexible as to arrival/departure time so please book best available flights.

How many students will be in a class?

There is a maximum of 15 students per class with on average 13 students per class. *

What qualifications do your teachers have?

All our teachers have a Bachelors Degree and a further Teaching English Qualification and all our teachers are recognised as qualified English Language Teachers under ACELS.

How do you place students into their correct English Level?

We test students on arrival and monitor their progress including weekly tests so students are able to move levels should we feel they are not in the correct level.

How many English Levels do you have?

We have from A2 to C1 Levels.

What happens the first day of school?

On arrival you will be tested and given welcome information and shown to their correct level class.

Yes, we provide letters for all students coming from outside the EU who need a visa to enter Ireland.

When do I pay the fees?

A deposit of 200 euro on booking is paid. The remainder of fees are due 3 weeks pre arrival.

Can I pay by credit card or cash?

Yes, we accept credit card, cash or bank transfer.

What is the refund policy?

Deposits are non refundable, for cancellations made 21 days or more pre arrival , the remainder of fees will be refunded.

If I miss a class will I get another class?

If you inform us in advance we can add on another class but there are no extra classes given if you miss classes.

Will I get a student card?

On full time programmes you will be eligible for a student discount card

Can I take holidays?

Yes, but if you are on a study visa some regulations apply please see the Non EEA information

 

If I choose to stay in your Home Stay Option

When will I receive host family information and what will it be ?

You will receive your host family profile including a map of their location 2 weeks pre arrival.

Can I contact the family pre arrival ?

Yes, their email address will be on their profile.

What If I am unhappy with my host family or class or any aspect of my stay ?

We are always here to help and will move you to a new family or class and assist in whatever way we can to ensure you are happy.

Do you offer airport transfers?

We can offer an airport transfer service but most adults opt to take a taxi from Dublin Airport to their home stay which will typically cost about 20 euro (10 minutes). Bus 102 also comes from the airport to Malahide and Portmarnock.

Is my Laundry done?

Yes, typically once a week by the host.

Do I have a single room ?

Yes, all adults have a single room.

How do you choose and ensure the quality of your homestays?

All our hosts are from our locality which means they are all within walking distance of our school or a very short bus journey away. This ensures they are members of the local community which we feel is very important. We visit all hosts and ensure they and their homes are suitable for hosting students. We also ensure all family members are garda vetted and continually monitor feedback to ensure we work only with welcoming caring hosts.

How do I go to and from my host family?

Students typically walk to and from school, all students live within a 30 minute walk. At some times of the year adult may live in the next town in Portmarnock which would be a 10 minute journey by bus to school, we will inform you of this at the time of booking.

Are all the home stays English Speaking?

Yes, they are all English Speakers.

Will I get a House Key?

Most hosts will give adult students a key.

Do I have a curfew?

No, adults don’t have curfews but as you are living in a family you would be expected to respect the family and not cause noise at night coming and going or bring friends back to the home.

Do you cater for special diets?

Yes, we can cater for special diets just check with us pre booking and sometimes a supplement will apply.
